The fear of God

Fear God and give him Glory

Do you fear God?

The Bible says we should, yet popular teachings these days seem to emphasize the love of God so much, that we cannot comprehend a God that would actually kill someone.

Lets look at the definition for the word culpability:

“In explanations and predictions of human action and inaction, culpability is a measure of the degree to which an agent, such as a person, can be held morally or legally responsible. ”

So is there scripture that would support the Christian God of being culpable in murder, or even being an outright murderer?

2Ki 19:35 NKJV – 35 And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when [people] arose early in the morning, there were the corpses–all dead.

What about the Flood?

What about Sodom and Gomorrah?

What about the death of the people by the plagues in Egypt, culminating in the death of eldest son in every family?

What about the people that got struck dead for touching the ark?

What about entering the promised land where all tribes had to expunged, women, children and livestock included?

What about the couple that dies for lying to Peter?

Act 5:1-10 NKJV – 1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back [part] of the proceeds, his wife also being aware [of it], and brought a certain part and laid [it] at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back [part] of the price of the land for yourself? 4 “While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried [him] out, and buried [him]. 7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband [are] at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying [her] out, buried [her] by her husband.

What about Herod, whom refused to praise God?

Act 12:23 NKJV – 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.

Now, if you think about it we are dealing with the creator of the universe here. The omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient creator of the universe.

Lets be serious now, is there is any death in this universe that God is not somehow culpable in? Say some guy crosses the street without looking, and gets hit by a car.

Did God not create the earth, the man, the car? Did God not know the guy would he crossing the road? Did He not know the accident would happen? Could He have stopped the accident from happening?

Does that not make Him culpable in this death to some degree? Saying no, makes God less than omnipotent, or omnipresent or omniscient – which means that we are not serving God, because we are breaking the definition for God, or serving a God with flaws…

We are supposed to Fear God as much as we Love Him:

  • God wants us to Fear Him. In Genesis when Abraham was about to sacrifice his son, God says:

Gen 22:12 NKJV – 12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only [son], from Me.”

  • Where the Fear of God is absent, lawlessness takes over:

Gen 20:11 NKJV – 11 And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God [is] not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.

Lev 19:14, 32 NKJV – 14 ‘You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I [am] the LORD. …

32 ‘You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I [am] the LORD.

Lev 25:17, 36, 43 NKJV – 17 ‘Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I [am] the LORD your God. …

36 ‘Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you. …

43 ‘You shall not rule over him with rigor, but you shall fear your God.

2Sa 23:3 NKJV – 3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men [must be] just, Ruling in the fear of God.

Neh 5:15 NKJV – 15 But the former governors who [were] before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of the fear of God.

  • Position and authority is given to those whom fear God:

Exd 18:21 NKJV – 21 “Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place [such] over them [to be] rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

  • God afflicts them that do not fear Him:

Exd 9:29-30 NKJV – 29 So Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the earth [is] the LORD’s. 30 “But as for you and your servants, I know that you will not yet fear the LORD God.”

Psa 55:19 NKJV – 19 God will hear, and afflict them, Even He who abides from of old. Selah Because they do not change, Therefore they do not fear God.

Ecc 8:13 NKJV – 13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong [his] days, [which are] as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.

  • The Fear God leads to blessings:

Deu 6:2 NKJV – 2 “that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

Deu 6:24 NKJV – 24 ‘And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as [it is] this day.

1Sa 12:14 NKJV – 14 “If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the LORD your God.

Ecc 8:12 NKJV – 12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred [times], and his [days] are prolonged, yet I surely know that it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him.

Psa 64:9 NKJV – 9 All men shall fear, And shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider His doing.

Psa 67:7 NKJV – 7 God shall bless us, And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

  • Those whom Fear God will hear from Him:

Psa 66:16 NKJV – 16 Come [and] hear, all you who fear God, And I will declare what He has done for my soul.

Pro 2:5 NKJV – 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.

  • We are commanded to Fear God:

Ecc 3:14 NKJV – 14 I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does [it], that men should fear before Him.

Ecc 12:13 NKJV – 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.

Deu 10:12 NKJV – 12 “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

2Ch 19:7 NKJV – 7 “Now therefore, let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take care and do [it], for [there is] no iniquity with the LORD our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes.”

Now before someone complains that this is just quotes from the old testament, remember God does not change. Here some from the new testament:

  • Not Fearing God leads to condemnation, as with the other thief on the cross next to Jesus:

Luk 23:40 NKJV – 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?

  • We are commanded to Fear God:

1Pe 2:17 NKJV – 17 Honor all [people]. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Eph 5:21 NKJV – 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Rev 14:7 NKJV – 7 saying with a loud voice, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

Rev 19:5 NKJV – 5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!”

  • The Fear of God leads to Holiness:

2Cr 7:1 NKJV – 1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Hbr 12:28 NKJV – 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

Hbr 10:31 NKJV – 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

1Pe 3:15 NKJV – 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always [be] ready to [give] a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

  • The Fear of God leads to salvation:

Act 13:16, 26 NKJV – 16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with [his] hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:

26 “Men [and] brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent.

So why would God go around killing and / or ordering people (even masses) to be killed?

I believe He does this to show us His authority and power and Sovereignty.

If  we did not have examples of Him doing this, would we actually fear Him?

Is it not the most loving thing He could do, to make us fear Him so THAT WE WILL BE SAVED?

I ask you again dear Christian, is your God a killer?

Do you not fear Him?

How sure are you that you are serving the Christian God…

Pro 1:7 NLT – 7 Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

If you think about it some more:

Did God really Kill them? Or did He not merely prevent them from living any further?

Is this not God’s prerogative?

Will we not all face the judgement seat first, and then receive our due penalty for sin, and then either true life, or the second permanent death.

Rev 2:11 NLT – 11 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.

Rev 20:6, 14 NLT – 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years. … 14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.

Rev 21:8 NLT – 8 “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars–their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
