How do I become a Christian?
– Prayer –
If you are willing to believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and if you are willing to accept Him as your savior, then you are invited to pray this prayer with me:
Lord Jesus, I have been a sinner, please forgive me.
Thank You for dying on the cross for me and freeing me from sin.
Help me to live as You commanded, “That we love one another as You have loved us.”
Please send me the Holy Spirit, and help me live by that Spirit.
I’m praying this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We are all sinners:
Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, `There is no God.` They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good. 2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
Are we justified when living by the 10 commandments?
In the old testament, God set the bar here:
Exd 20:3 NLT – “You must not have any other god but me.
Exd 20:4 NLT – “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
Exd 20:5 NLT – You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected–even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
Exd 20:6 NLT – But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
Exd 20:7 NLT – “You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Exd 20:8 NLT – “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Exd 20:9 NLT – You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
Exd 20:10 NLT – but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
Exd 20:11 NLT – For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
Exd 20:12 NLT – “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Exd 20:13 NLT – “You must not murder.
Exd 20:14 NLT – “You must not commit adultery.
Exd 20:15 NLT – “You must not steal.
Exd 20:16 NLT – “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Exd 20:17 NLT – “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
In the new Testament, Jesus comes along and raises this bar even higher:
Mat 5:27 NLT – “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’
Mat 5:28 NLT – But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Mat 5:43 NLT – “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy.
Mat 5:44 NLT – But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!
Mat 5:45 NLT – In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.
Mat 5:46 NLT – If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.
Mat 5:47 NLT – If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that.
Mat 5:48 NLT – But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.
We are no longer made righteous or justified by our actions, but by our Hearts instead! What we feel and how we think! We are commanded to be perfect…
Romans 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
We are all doomed:
John 3:36 `He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.`
John 3:17 `For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 `He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
What God did for you:
John 3:16 `For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Mark 10:45 `For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.`
Acts 17:30 `Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.`
Romans 5:19 For as through the one man`s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
Jhn 10:9 NLT – Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
Jhn 10:10 NLT – The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
Jhn 10:11 NLT – “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.
The world`s response:
Acts 13:38 `Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses. 40 `Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you: 41 `BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU.` `
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,
1 Corinthians 1:27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,
The Christian`s response:
Acts 16:30 and after he brought them out, he said, `Sirs, what must I do to be saved?` 31 They said, `Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.`
Mark 1:15 and saying, `The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.`
John 6:28 Therefore they said to Him, `What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?` 29 Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.`
How to get saved:
Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
So we are saved by believing in Jesus: That He took our sins upon Himself, and died and paid the price on our behalf, to make us righteous / justified in front of God. So when God now looks at us, He sees us spotless and perfect, free of sin, through His son’s blood and sacrifice.
Not all / everyone will be saved:
Luke 18:8 `I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?`
John 20:29 Jesus said to him, `Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.`
What God expects:
John 14:15 `If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 15:12 `This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
Matthew 7:12 `In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Romans 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Become holy and righteous:
A word of warning: although we are commanded to become Holy and righteous, we are NEVER to think that we are somehow EARNING our own righteousness. We live Holy lives out of thankfulness and obedience, and to show with our lives that our faith is real – we are not just saying we believe, but are also living and showing it. Even our best works are tainted with sin, only Christ makes us perfect in front of God…
Rom 6:16 NLT – Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
Rom 6:17 NLT – Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.
Rom 6:18 NLT – Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
Rom 6:19 NLT – Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.
Rom 6:20 NLT – When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right.
Rom 6:21 NLT – And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.
Rom 6:22 NLT – But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
Rom 6:23 NLT – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Rom 7:4 NLT – So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God.
Rom 7:5 NLT – When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death.
Rom 7:6 NLT – But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.
Rom 8:11 NLT – The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
Rom 8:12 NLT – Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
Rom 8:13 NLT – For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
Rom 8:14 NLT – For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
Phl 1:9 NLT – I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.
Phl 1:10 NLT – For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.
Phl 1:11 NLT – May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation–the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ –for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
Col 3:1 NLT – Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
Col 3:2 NLT – Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
Col 3:3 NLT – For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.
Col 3:4 NLT – And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
Col 3:5 NLT – So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
Col 3:6 NLT – Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming.
1Pe 2:16 NLT – For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.
1Pe 2:17 NLT – Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God, and respect the king.
Tts 2:11 NLT – For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.
Tts 2:12 NLT – And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,
Tts 2:13 NLT – while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.
Tts 2:14 NLT – He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
Will it be difficult?
Mat 11:28 NLT – Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 NLT – Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Mat 11:30 NLT – For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
You will be tested!
Act 14:22 NLT – where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.
Rom 5:3 NLT – We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.
Rom 5:4 NLT – And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.
Rom 5:5 NLT – And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Rom 5:6 NLT – When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.
We have a helper / comforter / advocate:
Luk 11:13 NLT – So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
Luk 24:49 NLT – “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Jhn 3:2 NLT – After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”
Jhn 3:3 NLT – Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
Jhn 3:4 NLT – “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”
Jhn 3:5 NLT – Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
Jhn 3:6 NLT – Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.
Jhn 3:7 NLT – So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’
Act 1:8 NLT – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere–in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Jhn 14:16 NLT – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
Jhn 14:17 NLT – He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
Jhn 14:26 NLT – But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative–that is, the Holy Spirit–he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Jhn 14:27 NLT – “I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Act 2:38 NLT – Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:14 NLT – When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there.
Act 8:15 NLT – As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:16 NLT – The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Act 8:17 NLT – Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
